If your approved concept uses similar material contrasts, distinguish what you want painted from what requires a different material or maker. A canvas can carry visible brushwork and layered colour, but it should not be commissioned as though it were automatically a ceramic relief. Identify the intended result in the brief before comparing quotations.

Mark where texture belongs and how prominent it should be. “Add texture” can change the focal point if thick marks spread into an area you wanted smooth.

• Show the image’s important outlines and any areas where their shape must remain clear.
• Distinguish actual raised paint from shadows and highlights painted to create an illusion of depth.
• Specify whether brushwork should be fine, broad, directional or softly blended.
• Identify quieter passages that should remain visually calm beside the stronger marks.

Request close photographs during production for the surface and a full view for the composition. A close-up can make a small ridge look dominant; the full view helps you judge whether the painting still has the balance your client approved.

Provide an authorised image and name its defining details. In a courtyard drawing, the arch profile or tile arrangement may matter more than foliage. In a coastal photograph, you may want to preserve a particular headland rather than turn it into a generic horizon.

Mark these features directly. “Mediterranean atmosphere” does not tell a painter which building, landscape or family memory your client expects to recognise.

Agree whether you want a crop, retained empty space or an authorised extension. These options change a location-based image in different ways. Cropping may remove a landmark; extending may introduce scenery that was never in the photograph.

For a wide work above a sideboard, show its relationship to the furniture and adjacent openings. If you select a diptych or triptych, mark where each division will fall and include the intended gaps. A panel joint should not cut through a recognisable architectural feature by accident.

When the available source lacks detail, tell us which parts must be faithful and which can be treated more loosely. Confirm this distinction before painting rather than discovering it during the final review.

Your approval should answer three different questions: is this the right composition, is the paint surface right, and does its visual weight suit the setting? Keep the approved artwork file separate from the room render so you can check each without confusing simulated lighting with painted colour.
