Working with our studio

We paint every piece to order in Dafen, Shenzhen, so the size, the palette and the finish are all decided by your project rather than by what happens to be in stock. You see photographs of the finished canvas before it ships, and nothing leaves the studio until you approve it. Trade pricing starts at one piece, and the rate improves as the count goes up.

Close-up of the gold lit bank, dark tree reflections and deep blue water in misty lake painting IA129, with ochre reeds in soft dragged strokes along the bottom

Where the sun breaks through the fog

Start at the low sun on the far shore, left of center. It is a small peach glow, and a thin line of pale yellow light drops from it into the water. Above and to the right, a tall shaft of butter yellow light opens in the clouds, so the brightest colors stack up in one column. The left side of the canvas stays soft and open, in mauve fog and silver blue water. The right side is heavier. A dark blue hill holds tall, thin trees with pale trunks, and below them a bank of bushes glows gold. Their dark reflections stream down into a pocket of deep blue water, and ochre reeds fill the bottom corner.

Blue and lavender lake wall art for entryways and living rooms

Cool art looks richest against a warm wall. On terracotta plaster, like the entryway shown here, the mauve fog turns soft and the gold bank picks up the warmth of the wall. Cream plaster and warm taupe give the same effect with less contrast, and a dusty rose wall makes the lavender sky look pinker. Cognac leather, walnut, linen and stoneware all suit the palette. As blue and lavender wall art for an entryway, the tall shape fits the wall above a bench or a slim console. In a living room it hangs well over a sectional or a reading chair, and in a hotel corridor it gives guests a still lake view between doors.

Painted to order, fog first and reeds last

Each IA129 is painted fresh for your order by one painter, who takes it from the first sketch to the final stroke. Nobody else works on it, and the job goes to a painter who paints landscapes like this every day. The horizon, the hill and the line of light are sketched on premium linen first. Then the painter mixes the mauve, slate blue and gold on the palette against this design and lays in the big soft fog with wide brushes. The trees, the glowing bank and the reflections go on last, so they sit on top of the mist. We paint in acrylic unless you ask for oil. Oil is available on request and takes longer. On WhatsApp you get photos and short videos as the painting goes, and you approve daylight photos of the finished canvas before it is released.

Production time for this design

One to five pieces take about 7 to 10 business days, and six to twenty take about 10 to 15. The 48 by 40 inch size and larger sit at the longer end, since one painter covers the whole canvas alone.

Fog, low light and a still lake

Fog is the real subject of IA129, more than the lake itself. Mauve and slate blue mist fills most of the canvas, and it hides the far shore, the top of the hill and the crowns of the trees. What is left is a few clear clues. A low sun sits on the horizon, a gold bank glows on the right, and dark reflections run down into the water. Because so much is hidden, the eye slows down and fills in the rest. That is why a scene like this works in rooms meant for rest, such as bedrooms, hotel rooms and spa lounges. It feels like an early walk by a lake before the fog lifts.

Following the light from sky to water

The painting is built around one column of light. It starts as a shaft of butter yellow in the clouds, slides down to the peach glow of the low sun, then turns into a thin bright streak on the water. That column sits left of center, while the heavy shapes, the dark hill, the trees and the gold bank, sit on the right. A thin dark spit of land runs from the middle of the lake toward the lower left and ends in a few dark rocks, which pulls the eye back to the front. The result feels balanced but not stiff, with open fog on one side and weight on the other.

Soft edges and the impressionist way of seeing

Impressionism began in nineteenth century France, when painters chose to catch light and air instead of exact detail. They used loose, broken strokes to show a passing moment, like sun through mist or light on water. IA129 follows that idea closely. None of the trees has a drawn outline. Each one is a few soft dabs of gray green on a pale trunk. The reflections are vertical drags of the brush, not mirror copies. Even the sun is only a warm smudge of peach at the edge of the water. Up close the painting looks almost abstract, and from a few steps back it turns into a lake.

Mauve, slate blue and a touch of gold

Most of the palette is cool. Mauve, lavender, slate blue and silver blue fill the sky and the water, with deep navy blue in the shaded water on the right. In color research, blue is widely linked with calm, low energy feelings, and the pale mauve keeps that calm soft rather than cold. The warm notes are small but important. Peach at the sun, butter yellow in the light shaft and ochre gold in the bank and reeds keep the scene from feeling icy. They also give a designer easy threads to pull into the room, such as a cognac leather bench, brass hardware or a mustard cushion.

A tall lake view for corridors and narrow walls

IA129 is a vertical canvas, 6 units tall for every 5 wide. That is close to square, so it fills more wall than a slim portrait but still fits between doors, windows and columns. In a hotel, it suits a lobby wall, the end of a guest corridor or the space above a luggage bench in a room. In a restaurant, the gold and mauve look good near warm wood and low lighting. For a home, try it above an entry bench, beside a fireplace or over a reading chair. Bigger walls can take the 60 by 50 inch or 72 by 60 inch sizes, and any size outside the list is painted to your measurements with the same proportions.

Pairing and sizing

Two paintings pair well with this lake. The golden sunset painting with pale rock cliffs (IA130) shares a similar lavender sky and low sun in the same tall shape, so the two hang well as a pair over a sofa or on facing walls of a corridor. For a wider wall, the layered misty blue mountain ridges painting (IA114) keeps the fog and the blue in a horizontal format.

For one canvas above furniture, aim for about two thirds of its width and hang the center 57 to 60 inches from the floor. As a pair over an 80 inch sofa, two canvases 30 inches tall by 25 inches wide, with a 3 inch gap, span about 53 inches. Every size is painted to order, and you approve daylight photos of your finished canvas before it ships.

Frequently asked questions

What does this misty lake painting show?

A still lake at sunset, seen through fog. A low peach sun sits on the far shore, and a shaft of pale yellow light opens in the mauve and slate blue clouds. On the right, tall thin trees stand on a dark hill above a gold bank, and their reflections run down into deep blue water. No real place is named, so the view suits a project in any location.

What wall color goes with a blue and lavender painting?

Warm walls bring out the cool fog. Cream, warm white and taupe plaster give a soft, tonal look. Terracotta or dusty rose gives more contrast, and the gold reeds in the painting help tie it to the wall. A cold, bright white can make the mauve sky look gray, so try a warm white first. Room light also shifts how the colors look, so a sample on the actual wall helps.

What size should this tall canvas be above a bench or console?

IA129 is 6 units tall for every 5 wide. Aim for about two thirds of the furniture width. Over a 60 inch entry bench, that points to the 48 inch tall by 40 inch wide size. Over a 48 inch console, try 40 inches tall by 33 inches wide. Leave about 8 to 10 inches between the furniture and the bottom of the frame.

Can the colors or the trees be changed?

Yes. The painter can warm the sky toward peach, cool the fog toward gray blue, or make the gold bank brighter or softer. Trees can be thinned out or moved, and the low sun can sit a little higher for more light. Send a photo of the room or a paint chip, and the colors are mixed against it on the palette. You see the changes in progress photos before the canvas is finished.

Is the paint surface smooth or textured?

Mostly smooth. The fog and sky are blended soft, and the water is pulled sideways in long, flat strokes. Light texture shows in the trees, the bushes and the reeds, where dry brush leaves small broken marks. It is not a thick impasto or plaster piece. From a few steps back it looks soft, and up close you can see the brush marks.

Will every canvas in a hotel order look the same?

Very close, but not identical. The low sun, the shaft of light, the tree line and the color balance stay the same on every canvas. The soft edges in the fog and the exact shape of each reflection change a little, since each one is painted by hand. For a large run, the painters can work from one approved sample canvas to keep the set tight.

Which frame suits a misty lake painting?

A thin gold or warm wood frame picks up the gold bank and the peach sun, which is the look in the room photos. Black gives a sharper, more modern edge, and white or silver keeps the whole piece cool. You can also order it rolled in a tube or stretched without a frame. Rolled canvas is the most compact to ship, and framed pieces arrive ready to hang.
