Blue and Beige Textured Abstract Portrait Painting: Building a Face in Layers

The client commissioned us to paint this abstract portrait in blue, ivory, warm beige and black, on a canvas 102 cm wide × 153 cm high. We developed the face through broad color shapes, dark defining marks and overlapping painted edges. This case follows the work from the early composition to the finished canvas, with close views showing how the raised surface gives the face its physical depth.

Stage 1

Establishing the face with broad painted shapes

The early photograph already contains the main arrangement of the face. Cream and beige passages occupy the center, with muted blue and gray areas around the cheek, jaw and outer edges.

Small dark marks suggest the eyes and mouth. They sit within a composition driven by large shapes, rather than a continuous realistic outline.

Stage 2

Defining the contrasts and overlapping edges

The developing view shows stronger dark passages above the face and around its edges. Narrow marks at the eyes and mouth help hold the features together amid the larger pale shapes.

The photographs were taken under different lighting, so they are useful for following the forms and surface—not as an exact color-matching comparison. The overlapping shapes and the direction of the paint remain visible across the views.

Stage 3

The finished texture: pale edges, warm strokes and cool blue

These three close views come from the same photograph of the finished painting. Raised pale edges border warmer strokes; broad blue marks run across the lower face and surrounding areas. The texture adds another layer of contrast alongside the colors.

Overlapping marks connect the face to the surrounding field.

From across the room, the face is the focal point. Up close, its painted surface becomes just as important: the uneven ridges and layered edges are part of the canvas itself, giving it a presence beyond a flat reproduction of the image.

Recognizable features, expressed through color and texture

The eyes, nose and mouth are suggested by dark lines and the boundaries between larger painted shapes. Pale blue surrounds warmer areas of the face, while a dark passage across the top gives the composition contrast.

The most striking details are at the edges: broad shapes overlap, and thin ridges stand proud of the surrounding paint.
