One client · Three photographs painted in oils
Highway Oil Painting from a Photo: A Small Canvas with a Long View
The client wanted their own highway photograph turned into an 18 × 24 cm oil painting on rolled canvas. They cared about the real painted surface, the match to the photograph’s colors and a close resemblance to the original view. The road, passing car and pale bonnet in the foreground gave this small painting a very specific composition to preserve. The paintings were commissioned as personal keepsakes.

Stage 1 — The photograph and brief
A familiar view from inside a car
The client chose photographs they had taken themselves and wanted them painted in oils as personal keepsakes. The brief focused on preserving resemblance and color while giving each image a real painted surface.
The photograph looks down a long, undulating road beneath a broad blue sky. A silver-colored car sits to the left, while the foreground bonnet and its diagonal seam occupy much of the lower image. These are the features that make the photograph recognizable: the commission needed to hold their relationship together, rather than become a generic road landscape.
Color matching here meant paying attention to the cool sky, muted roadside greens, gray road and very pale foreground. The client’s request combined that resemblance with a visibly hand-painted result. At 18 × 24 cm, the car and distant lane markings occupy only a small part of the canvas.
From the same client’s order: see the mossy trees and a winding path and black-and-white mountain in oils.
Stage 2 — Painting progress
Establishing the road before refining the car
The first studio photograph shows the road as broad converging bands. The dark line of trees sets the horizon, and the car is still built from a few larger shapes. In the later photograph, the front of the car, lane markings and distant vehicles become more distinct. The dark diagonal on the bonnet remains a strong guide through the foreground.
Stage 3 — Painted details
Road perspective and small painted edges
The early close view makes the physical surface easy to see: brush direction and the canvas weave remain visible through the painted road. The finished detail shows how small dark and light strokes make the car readable. A photographic print would reproduce the source image; this commission rebuilds its shapes and color relationships in oil paint.
Stage 4 — The completed canvas
The finished 18 × 24 cm oil painting

The completed 18 × 24 cm canvas keeps the low horizon, passing car and large pale foreground in the same visual order as the photograph. Small scattered marks remain visible across the sky and foreground, echoing features in the supplied image. The canvas is shown with its real white margin and a little of the wooden surface beneath it.
The order was specified as rolled canvas. This individual view has been taken from the photograph of the two completed small paintings together.
