One client · Three photographs painted in oils

Tree-Lined Path Oil Painting from a Photo: Matching a Cool Green Landscape

The client commissioned an 18 × 24 cm oil painting from their own photograph of a path beside moss-draped trees. They wanted real painted texture while keeping the colors and composition close to the photograph. The order was for rolled canvas, and the cool green atmosphere was central to this particular image. The paintings were commissioned as personal keepsakes.

Stage 1 — The photograph and brief

Preserving the green atmosphere of the photograph

The client chose photographs they had taken themselves and wanted them painted in oils as personal keepsakes. The brief focused on preserving resemblance and color while giving each image a real painted surface.

Tall trunks and hanging foliage fill the right side of the reference. The open sky and grass on the left provide breathing space, while a pale path curves from the foreground toward the distance. The photograph’s pronounced blue-green cast is part of the supplied reference and gives the scene its distinctive atmosphere.

For this commission, resemblance involved both the arrangement of the trees and the relationship between those greens: dark trunks, softer hanging strands, brighter leaves and the cool pale path. The client also wanted the image to become a real oil painting, with marks made in paint rather than a flat photographic reproduction.

From the same client’s order: see the highway and car in oils and black-and-white mountain in oils.

Stage 2 — Painting progress

From broad green shapes to hanging foliage

The first photograph shows large, simplified areas of green, with the pale path already giving the scene its direction. The later view separates the trunks from the foliage and breaks the canopy into smaller marks. Light green touches sit against darker vertical strokes, while the open lawn remains comparatively quiet.

Early painting: the main tree masses, open grass and pale path are blocked in.

Stage 3 — Painted details

Leaf marks, tree shadows and a pale path

The foliage close view shows short, distinct touches of pale green alongside longer dark strokes. Around the path, broader passages carry the open ground and shadows. These differences in mark size and direction give the oil-painted surface its character while keeping the scene legible at a small scale.

Stage 4 — The completed canvas

The finished 18 × 24 cm canvas brings the tree line, hanging foliage and curved path together. The comparison at the top makes it possible to look directly at the photograph’s cool palette beside the painted interpretation. The complete studio view below retains the unpainted canvas margin and the surrounding wooden surface.

This was specified as rolled canvas. The finished view is separated from the shared photograph of this painting and the highway painting, so each work can be seen clearly in its own case.
