A real painting commission
Mountain and Waterfall Landscape Painting Commission: From Reference to a Lake with Deer
The client wanted this mountain-and-waterfall landscape painted because they liked the scene. The commissioned canvas measures 140 cm wide × 70 cm high. The original reference brings together snowy peaks, a turquoise lake, woodland and three deer on the shore. Studio photographs show how that composition developed on canvas, from drawn outlines to the finished painting.

Stage 1 — The chosen landscape
A scene the client wanted painted
The reference establishes the main arrangement: snowy peaks above a misty valley, waterfalls feeding the lake, tall trees framing both sides and a path curving through the left foreground. Three deer stand on the right shore. The reference and finished canvas above let you compare how these elements were translated into paint.
Stage 2 — Developing the scene
From drawn outlines to a painted lake and cliffs
In the early photograph below, the sky and some mountain areas already carry color, while much of the woodland, lake and foreground remains outlined. The developing view shows the central cliffs, waterfall and lake taking shape. The right-hand trees are more developed, while the trees on the left still show their drawn structure.

Stage 3 — The finished painting
The completed mountain, lake and deer panorama
The finished view shows the left-hand woodland filled in, a path curving around the lake and small deer along the right shore. Snowy ridges and mist occupy the upper part of the composition, with the lake’s reflections connecting the mountains to the foreground.
