Palm Tree Sunset Painting Commission: Adapting a Coastal Reference to 54 × 48 Inches
The client commissioned a palm tree sunset painting at 54 inches wide × 48 inches high. We first prepared a mockup from the original landscape reference for the nearly square canvas, then painted the leaning palm, low sun and reflected light across the sea.
Finding the balance in a nearly square format
The original reference is a wider coastal view. The prepared mockup brings the leaning palm and the low sun into a taller, nearly square composition suited to the requested canvas. This step came before the painting began.
The palm’s arc connects the darker foreground to the sky, while the sun stays in the open space to its left. Keeping that separation gives both subjects room: the fronds can spread across the upper canvas without closing off the sunset.
For this client, we also prepared and painted the river cityscape painting. See its reference, painting process and surface details.
Before painting began, we reorganized the composition to fit the requested dimensions and prepared a mockup. The client was happy with that layout. This gave the painting an agreed composition at the chosen proportions.
Building the light before refining the leaves and shoreline
The early photograph establishes the blue upper sky, warm light around the sun and the dark shape of the leaning palm. The sea is painted in broad horizontal passages, and the foreground remains a comparatively simple dark mass.
The later view gives the palm more distinct fronds and fine leaf strands. Clouds gain smaller warm and cool transitions, the waves become more articulated, and grasses and patches of light give the foreground more depth. The horizon remains a calm line beneath the more active palm leaves.
Palm fronds, warm clouds and shoreline brushwork
Dedicated close photographs and crops of the full canvas follow the smaller decisions in the sea, clouds, palm leaves and foreground.

The sea detail records real brushwork on the canvas, including small raised highlights. A flat photographic print can show the pattern of those marks; here their direction and physical surface also contribute to the changing light across the painting.
The 54 × 48 inch palm sunset canvas
The full painting brings the finer leaves, textured foreground and more developed waves back into one calm coastal scene. The palm stays dark enough to read clearly against the light without becoming an undifferentiated silhouette.
The prepared format gives the sky and tree more vertical room than the original wider reference. The low sun, its reflection and the leaning trunk remain the main relationships that hold the composition together.
Preparing the mockup first established how the landscape would sit within the requested dimensions, before the smaller painted details were developed.
