A real client commission

Textured Autumn Landscape Painting: From First Sketch to Raised Leaves

The client commissioned us to paint an autumn scene featuring two figures sharing an umbrella beneath colorful trees. The commissioned canvas measures 32 inches wide × 24 inches high. We developed the landscape from a lightly drawn composition into broad passages of color, raised foliage and reflections across the path. The photographs and painting footage below show the work behind the commission, from the early arrangement to the small painted details that give the scene its atmosphere.

Stage 1

Sketching a path into the scene

The recorded sketch shows the structure before the autumn colors fill the canvas. Tree trunks line the right side, a row of lamps follows the left, and the path narrows toward a pale opening in the distance.

The figures and umbrella are already placed near the center. These small shapes give the scene a human focus, while the trees and lamps establish a sense of distance.

Stage 2

Laying in the autumn colors

A broad painted view shows green and yellow across the left canopy, with orange, red and deep brown on the right. The trunks form dark vertical lines against the lighter distance.

The path is built from larger blue, green and dark passages. At this point, the sweep of the brush carries much of the foliage; individual raised leaves are not yet spread across the canopy.

Stage 3

Building a canopy of raised leaves

The next view makes the physical change easy to see. Separate deposits of yellow, orange, green and red paint sit above the broader groundwork. Blue and violet accents break up the warm colors among the trees.

Across the foreground, longer horizontal strokes begin to describe reflections. The leaves have compact, irregular edges; the marks on the path stretch sideways. Those different paint shapes help separate the foliage from the wet-looking ground.

Stage 4

Refining the small details: leaves, lamps and the umbrella couple

The process footage captures work on both the figures and the trees. White paint defines the lighter figure’s clothing, while smaller green marks extend the foliage around the lamps. These touches connect the large areas of color to the intimate scale of the couple beneath the umbrella.

Close-up views of the painted texture

In these crops from the same painting photograph, the relief is visible in the edges of the leaves, the umbrella and the bands of reflected color. The paint itself contributes to the scene: its ridges catch light and give the surface depth when viewed nearby.

From the whole scene to the surface

What gives this landscape its hand-painted character?

From a distance, the composition reads as an autumn walk: glowing trees, a pale opening and two people beneath an umbrella. Up close, the raised paint becomes part of the experience. Some marks are broad and quiet; others have sharp edges, layered colors and visible height.

A flat print can reproduce the image of those marks. On this canvas, their depth belongs to the painted surface. Looking at both the full scene and the close details helps explain the difference between choosing an image and choosing the texture of a hand-painted work.

The complete autumn scene

The canopy, lamps and reflected colors now read as one autumn scene. Around the umbrella couple, small raised marks add definition without losing the broad sweep of the path and trees.
