A real client commission
Soft Blue and Sage Abstract Oil Painting Commission: Delicate Color, Genuine Oil Texture
The client requested a 42 × 26 inch abstract painting with fresh, delicate colors and the distinctive texture of oil paint. They were explicit about the medium: oil paint only, with no acrylic substitution. We worked with pale blue, sage green and ivory, developing visible brushwork while keeping the overall effect light. Follow the commission from its reference and first color passages to the framed canvas, protective packing and its arrival in the client’s home.

The brief: soft color, with oil paint as a requirement
The client supplied a reference image and specifically wanted oil paint because she found its texture more beautiful and elegant. This material preference was the distinctive requirement of her brief; she did not specify further changes beyond the supplied reference.
The reference brought together muted blue and green shapes, creamy open areas and narrow dark lines. It gave the composition a starting point; the task was to carry that gentle balance into an actual painted surface at the requested size.
From the prepared canvas to the first color passages
The earliest photographs show the canvas with its working area taped out, followed by broad blue, green and pale neutral passages. Dark lines establish the main divisions while the color remains loose. These early marks set the direction for the more defined oil painting that follows.
Developing texture while keeping the palette light
As the composition develops, pale strokes overlap the blue and green areas. Broken edges and narrow dark marks remain visible through the lighter passages, giving the painting structure without letting the dark areas dominate.
The close photographs show a mixture of thinner passages and more pronounced paint ridges. That variation supports the client’s two priorities: a gentle overall impression and a surface with visible oil-painted character.
The oil texture up close: fine brush lines and raised edges
A quiet palette can still have a richly worked surface. The angled photograph below shows parallel brush lines through the blue, small ridges where pale strokes meet, and areas where the canvas weave remains visible. These details are part of the actual paint surface, giving the work depth beyond the reproduced image alone.
The broader view brings those marks back into context. Ivory space allows the blue and sage areas to breathe, while small warm accents and thin dark lines connect the composition. Differences in lighting between the photographs also affect how strongly the colors and surface relief appear.
Wrapping the framed painting and enclosing it in a wooden case
The packing photographs belong to this commission. They show the painting covered with protective material inside its wooden case, followed by the closed case. The care taken with the painted surface continues through this final preparation, helping reduce the risk of rubbing, pressure and damage during transport.
The finished oil painting in its frame
A slim gold-tone frame gives the pale composition a clear boundary. Its narrow edge leaves the oil-painted surface as the focus and echoes the small warm accents within the picture.
The finished photograph shows the full composition in a horizontal presentation. The commissioned size is 42 × 26 inches; the frame adds its own outer edge.
A quiet palette, now part of a real home
