Starry Night Cityscape Oil Painting Commission: A Golden Dome, Boats and Swirling Blue Texture
The client asked us to paint their AI-generated image of a golden dome, boats and a swirling night sky at 27 inches wide × 54 inches high. They placed particular importance on the painted texture and on keeping the work close to their reference. This canvas was commissioned alongside the matching bridge cityscape.
Client priorities Close resemblance to their AI-generated reference · Visible, physical paint texture
Following the AI reference in composition and texture
The client supplied an AI-generated image and wanted a hand-painted oil canvas with visibly raised brushstrokes, clear architectural outlines and a close resemblance to that reference. The painting was intended for their home, with a small light planned above it. The surface texture and the clarity of the scene both mattered to that intended display.
The reference places a warm architectural focal point below an expansive blue sky. Several boats occupy the lower part of the picture, surrounded by vertical trails of reflected light. The tall format allows each area to have its own space.
The work depends on more than repeating the reference’s colors. The curved sky needs a clear direction, the dome needs convincing light and shade, and the boats need enough definition to remain distinct against the bright water. These relationships give the composition its depth.
The same client also commissioned our starry-night bridge painting. See its reference, painting process and surface details.
Building the sky around an established waterfront
The earlier full-canvas photograph already contains the dome, shoreline lights and boats. The stars sit within a deep blue sky, with finer curved strokes marking out the larger swirls. Some of the blue passages are comparatively thin and quiet.
In the developing view, pale blue, turquoise and warm yellow strokes give those same curves a more pronounced surface. The strokes follow the turning shapes rather than covering the sky evenly. Around the dome, the painter leaves enough dark blue to keep its golden outline clear.
From raised stars to the dome and harbor boats
The client specifically requested raised oil brushstrokes and clear architectural outlines. These details show the separate paint ridges alongside the dome’s silhouette and the waterfront buildings. With a small light planned above the painting at home, the relief of the real painted surface was part of the brief. The photographs here show the work in the studio.

This is a painted surface, not simply a picture of texture. The close views show real paint ridges and flatter passages side by side. A flat photographic print can carry the same colors and shapes, but these raised strokes also respond to light across the canvas.
The finished 27 × 54 inch dome-and-boats canvas

The completed work connects the large stars to the smaller shoreline lights and their reflections. The dome provides a warm, steady focal point, while the blue swirls continue above it and the boats give the water a sense of scale.
This view shows the complete hand-painted canvas. The client’s priorities—recognizable composition and a substantial painted surface—can be seen together here, after the closer views of the brushwork.
Together with the bridge scene, this painting forms a coordinated pair without repeating the same skyline or foreground.
